Summer Program

The exchange program was probably one of the most formative events of my life. I was a girl who had only been outside of Southern Ontario once before! And now I have travelled around the world a few times. I wonder who I would have become if it hadn’t been for France?

About the Program

The Summer program offers students aged 13 to 17 the opportunity to participate in:

A 3 Week Exchange with a partner from FranceSwitzerland or Quebec!Château Frontenac, Québec

A 4 Week Exchange with a partner from FranceSpain, Italy, or Germany!

Ontario students spend 3/4 weeks visiting their exchange partner and host their partner for the same duration during the summer. Ontario students receive a language and cultural experience of their host destination and visiting students receive an English language experience while here.

Summer program applicants must:

  • Be between 13 and 17 years of age
  • Be active, outgoing, open-minded and responsible
  • Be enthusiastic and eager to participate in new activities
  • Have the desire to improve their French, Spanish, Italian or German language skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in the history and culture of their chosen destination
  • Not be employed while their exchange partner is visiting

The applicant’s parent(s)/ family must:

  • Have a home that: is clean and orderly; has adequate space for the visiting partner; is free of substance abuse, physical abuse, or any other form of abuse
  • Be warm, caring and open; can host a student in a supervised, safe and comfortable atmosphere; can provide for all meals and the cost of family activities for the student during the hosting period
  • Be willing and able to speak only English at home during the hosting period
  • Commit to the reciprocal nature of the exchange program (hosting a partner for the time designated is required)
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring their child has the travel documentation required for travel to/from Europe
  • Submit a clear Vulnerable Sector Check for each adult aged 18 and over living in the host home(s) (dated within one year of the start of the hosting period)
  • Maintain regular communication with the exchange partner’s parent(s)/family throughout the exchange period

Participation costs for the 2018 Summer Program are as follows:

Exchanges with Europe: $2,999

  • $500 Registration Fee to be submitted by March 5, 2018
  • Remaining balance of $2499 due with acceptance by no later than May 1, 2018

Exchanges with Quebec: $1200

  • $500 Registration Fee to be submitted by March 5, 2018
  • Remaining balance of $700 due with acceptance by no later than May 1, 2018

Program fees include:

  • Chaperoned international air travel from/to Toronto Pearson Int’l Airport in economy class on regular airlines
  • Unchaperoned connecting flight in the host country, where required
  • Travel insurance: trip cancellation and interruption, AND emergency medical /hospital
  • ISE administration fee


  • Personal spending money
  • Domestic flight/shuttle service to/from Toronto Pearson Airport (program is based out of/ in to Toronto Pearson Airport)
  • Any fees or costs associated with domestic flight/shuttle to/from Toronto Pearson Airport (i.e. checked luggage)
  • Excess or overweight baggage charges imposed by the airlines
  • Expenses resulting from travel changes caused by events beyond the control of ISE Ontario.
